To understand the concerns of caregivers of a child/adolescent with disability


Opening Questions: General Information

  1. Do I have your consent to take your interview for the purpose of _____?
  2. What is your name, age and occupation?
  3. What’s the child’s name and age?
  4. Which class is the child studying in?
  5. Please describe your family (SES, Joint/Extended/Nuclear, etc.)

Nature of Disability and Level of Dependence

  1. Please describe the nature and extent of disability of the child/adolescent.
  2. What is the nature and level of the child/adolescent’s dependence on you?
  3. Are any other family member(s) disabled? If yes: What is their level of dependence on you?

Initial Reaction on Learning About the Child/Adolescent’s Disability

  1. When and how did you first learn about your child/adolescent's disability? What was the age of onset?
  2. Can you describe your initial reaction upon learning about your child/adolescent's disability?

Acceptance of Reality and Coping Strategies Used by the Caregiver/Family

  1. Can you describe the emotions you experienced - such as denial, anger, bargaining, or depression?
  2. How did you cope with these emotions?
  3. Do you still experience any feelings of sorrow or loss related to your child/adolescent's disability? Have you accepted the disability of your child/adolescent?
  4. What activities or strategies help you cope i.e., recharge and maintain your well-being despite the hardships and strains you encounter? Do you practice self-care?

Hardships/Strains Faced and Coping

  1. What are the hardships/strains you face in your role as a caregiver?
  2. Have you faced any financial difficulties due to the disability?
  3. Have you encountered any challenges or strains in your marital relationship as a result of your child/adolescent's disability? If yes, how have you addressed them?
  4. How do you cope with these hardships/strains related to caregiving?
  5. Have you encountered any instances of stigma, negative social attitudes or discrimination towards your child/adolescent or family due to their disability? If yes, how do you address them?

Support Received

  1. How did your friends and family members react to the child/adolescent’s disability? Have they supported you?
  2. What kind of support do you require the most? And who do you rely on the most to assist you? 
  3. Are there any support groups or resources that you have found helpful in navigating the impact of the child/adolescent's disability on your family? Any support groups, NGOs, etc.?

Socio-Emotional Aspects of the Condition

  1. How do societal attitudes and perceptions towards the disability influence your child/adolescent?
  2. Have you ever noticed any socio-emotional issues and challenges such as loneliness, inability to make friends/interact socially, depression, or low self-esteem in your child/adolescent? 
    1. If yes: How do you handle them?
  3. How do you ensure a supportive and inclusive environment for your child/adolescent within your family and the community to address these socio-emotional aspects?

Coping Methods Used by the Child/Adolescent

  1. How does your child/adolescent cope with the challenges and limitations posed by their disability?
  2. Are there any specific coping strategies or techniques that have been particularly effective?
  3. How does your child/adolescent cope with the socio-emotional aspects of the disability?

Abilities of the Child/Adolescent

  1. What are the abilities of your child/adolescent? In addition, are there any unique abilities or strengths that your child/adolescent possesses?
  2. How do you encourage and nurture the talents and capabilities of your child/adolescent?

Future Plans for the Child/Adolescent

  1. What are your biggest concerns about the future for your child/adolescent?
  2. What are your hopes and aspirations for your child/adolescent in terms of their future development and independence?
  3. Have you made any specific plans or arrangements for your child/adolescent's care and well-being in the future after you are unable to care/pass away?

Closing Questions: Advice for Others Facing Similar Situation

  1. Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience as a caregiver?
  2. What advice would you offer to other parents/caregivers who may be facing similar challenges and experiences with their child/adolescent's disability?
