  1. As part of my Master's Degree Programme, I’m conducting an activity - about understanding the stressors, strains/hardships, support, etc. faced in case of chronic illness - do I have your consent to take your interview for this purpose?
  2. What is your name?

  4. What is your occupation?
  5. How are you related to the patient?
  6. Do you suffer from some form of chronic illness or ill-health? If yes:
    1. Please elaborate.
  7. How does your illness affect your ability to care for the patient?

Impact of the Illness

  1. What specific challenges does your loved one face in managing their illness (treatment adherence, pain management, emotional coping)?
  2. What is the nature of support that you provide? How much time does it take you on a day-to-day basis?
  3. Can you describe the initial emotions and reactions you experienced upon learning about the chronic illness affecting your loved one?
  4. How have the stressors and strains associated with caregiving for an adult with chronic illness impacted your daily life and emotional well-being?
  5. Can you discuss any lifestyle changes or adjustments that you have had to make as a family or you as a primary caregiver in response to the chronic illness?
  6. How do you perceive the impact of the chronic illness on your family's overall dynamics, relationships, and sense of cohesion?
  7. How has your caregiving role impacted your ability to work, pursue education, or engage in other activities and responsibilities including family responsibilities and relationships?
  8. How has the caregiving role affected your overall sense of psychological well-being and self-esteem?
  9. How do you navigate the emotional complexities and uncertainties that arise from witnessing your loved one's illness progression and treatment journey? Have you ever faced any emotional challenges (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem)? 

Stressors and Hardships

  1. Have you encountered any barriers or challenges in getting treatment for your loved one’s illness - accessing healthcare services, treatment options, or support resources for managing your chronic illness due to financial or other reasons? If yes: Please elaborate.
  2. What are the biggest challenges (stressors/strains/hardships) you have encountered as a result of your caregiving role? How have you addressed or managed these challenges?
  3. Can you discuss any financial challenges or concerns you have encountered as a result of your caregiving role, such as medical expenses or loss of income?
  4. Can you discuss any challenges or adjustments you have experienced in balancing caregiving responsibilities with other obligations such as work and personal life?
  5. Can you discuss any challenges or adjustments you have experienced in maintaining social connections and support networks due to your caregiving role?
  6. Have you encountered any instances of stigma or discrimination from others due to your loved one’s illness? How do you respond to these experiences?
  7. Have you experienced any feelings of isolation or inadequacy in your role as the primary caregiver? Did you ever feel: helpless, restless or imprisoned? If yes: how did you cope with these feelings?

Support Systems

  1. Do you feel you have enough support from your family and healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, specialists) to be able to successfully perform your caregiving role?
  2. What sources of support, whether from family, friends, healthcare providers, have been most beneficial to you in managing the demands of caregiving?
  3. Have you participated in any support groups or counselling services to address the emotional impact of caring for a person with a chronic illness? If yes: Please elaborate. Did it help?
